Managing staff so they can manage themselves

  • Why do we have some hierarchy in all organizations?
  • One person can't supervise all staff
    1. Span of Control, if too large leads to staff not feeling supported
    2. Medical Providers need some autonomy and
    3. Specialization means clinical staff need clinical management in addition to departmental management
    4. Health Directors should never 'practice medicine.'
  • I've had success convincing health programs that with the right systems, the right people and the right goals they can manage without a typical hierarchy.

  • This does not mean no one is in charge, but clear lines of authority can still allow independence

  • Health professionals need maximum autonomy, but guidance on tribal mission. 

  • All staff will 'give' more in direct relationship to their own autonomy in their position.
